Petz Kittens Review

by Lucas M. Thomas - IGN.com | 27 July 2010 12:00

Far too little to do.

Ubisoft's Petz series of virtual pet games often offer only limited designs, but Petz Kittens on DSiWare might be its most feature-lite release yet. There are, near as I can tell, only four activities -- feeding your kitten, playing peekaboo or red light/green light, tossing a balloon around and just rubbing the animal with the stylus to pet it. I guess going out to the grocery store to buy more food is also in there? Why not. We'll call it five.

But even being generous with the count, the less than half a dozen different things to do here is way too spartan for a download that costs eight dollars to own. It's even wimpy in how it displays your pet -- cat-focused virtual pet games most often at least feature your creature wandering around and jumping on furniture, acting catlike for your amusement. This one, though, gives you a one-day-old newborn kitten who can't actually move. It just sits there on a pillowtop and occasionally meows. (And the 3D model for each newborn cat is kind of ugly.)

Then, if you soldier onward and spend the time and effort to help the cat grow up, you just have to start the whole process over again -- grown cats go back to the pet shop to be resold to other owners. So this is, apparently, a sim of that small span of time at the beginning of a kitten's life when a foster family takes it in for just a short while, watching over it just long enough for it to become marketable for somebody else. Would've been nice to know that going in, but I guess Petz Kittens Get Taken Away From You is a bit too long of a title.

Closing Comments
Virtual pet fans, skip out on this disappointing design and invest your Points in a more capable option, like 101 Shark Pets.
