iZombieland Review
by Levi Buchanan - IGN.com | 07 October 2009 12:00Dual chainsaws FTW.
iZombieland is better than it has any right to be. It's a licensed movie game with a silly "I" in front of the title and lacks the support of the film's cast. However, what it does get right is the over-the-top tone of the horror comedy smash hit -- and really, that's what matters.
In case you've yet to see the flick or missed any of the trailers, Zombieland is a post-apocalyptic tale of one man's quest for a Twinkie. Between him and that snack cake is a world overrun by zombies. This warrior is Tallahassee, named after his home town. He hooks up with Columbus, also named for his home town (the gimmick is so neither man grows terribly attached to the other in the likely event the zombies rip one of them apart). Together, they make their way across the country and pick up two more survivors.
iZombieland touches a little on the story of the movie, but really just drills down to a series of scenes where you blast, slice, and strum to (re)death thousands of zombies. The controls are very simple. Movement buttons flank the screen, as do attack buttons for each direction since the zombies attack from both sides – often at the same time. The proximity of the zombie determines whether or not you get a one-hit kill. If a green target appears over a zombie, you can take them down with a lone attack. The closer the zombie gets, though, the more hits it takes to kill. After building up a solid series of kills, you can unleash a special attack that wipes out every zombie closing in around you.
iZombieland is not a large game. It can be plowed through in an hour or so, which makes me a bit squeamish about the $3.99 price tag. However, I do not recommend just hammering through the game. Enjoy it in episodes. iZombieland is a game where you kill for five minutes, then go do something else. There are extra difficulty levels to unlock as well as several survival levels. These increase the longevity to a degree, but it's not like the introduce any new real estate to explore or zombies to kill.
iZombieland was reviewed with version 0.15.12.

iZombieland is a snack – a fun, silly, blood-drenched snack. The simple play mechanics and fast-paced action are right on the money for the game’s inspiration. I think it is a touch spendy for what is offered – after all, there are other left-right-kill action games on the App Store for a buck – but I do not doubt that fans of the movie or of over-the-top zombie-killin’ would have fun here one bus ride at a time.
