Notch Challenges Bethesda to Quake 3 Match

by Peter Eykemans - IGN.com | 18 August 2011 12:00

Does Scrolls infringe on The Elder Scrolls' name? Let a fragfest decide!

Notch, the creator of Minecraft, announced a challenge to Bethesda this morning to settle the dispute over the name Scrolls once and for all.

Classic combat.

"Remember that scene in Game of Thrones where Tyrion chose a trial by battle in the Eyrie? Well, let's do that instead!" he says. And he's referring to a very specific trial by battle in this case.

Forget the lawyers and the paperwork, Notch has challenged Bethesda to a game of Quake 3. The rules are simple: "Three of our best warriors against three of your best warriors. We select one level, you select the other, we randomize the order. 20 minute matches, highest total frag count per team across both levels wins."

This comes down to a single decision: "If we win, you drop the lawsuit. If you win, we will change the name of Scrolls to something you're fine with."

Just how good is Notch's team? Only time will tell, but this alternative is strangely appropriate for this industry. As an olive branch Notch adds, "Regardless of the outcome, we could still have a small text somewhere saying our game is not related to your game series in any way, if you wish."

You can read the full challenge on Notch's blog. What are your thoughts on this potential royal rumble?
