Final Fantasy XIII Tops Five Million

Final Fantasy XIII appears to be off to a great start -- at least amongst retailers. Square Enix announced today that worldwide shipments of the game have reached the five million mark thanks to a big boost from an initial shipment of three million units in North America and Europe.
 
Square Enix's numbers tell us that Japan saw shipments of two million units since the game was released there on December 17 as a PlayStation 3 exclusive. The game disappeared form the weekly sales charts long ago, but appeared to be slowly inching (or maybe millimetering) towards the two million mark at last sighting.
 
The five million figure is shipped and not sold. For actual slaes figures in North America, we'll have to wait for the monthly NPD results.
 
Independent sales data should also give us a first sign of how the Xbox 360 version is doing compared to the PS3 version. Square Enix did not provide shipment breakdowns.
 
Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada, who was in San Francisco for the launch, previously said in a Reuters interview that he hopes to see FFXIII's worldwide shipments top FFXII. This would mean at least six million units.
 
The Final Fantasy series as a whole has shipped over 96 million units worldwide, Square Enix also said today.
