Family Feud Review
by Colin Moriarty - IGN.com | 07 July 2010 12:00Survey says...
Not too long ago, Ludia gave us a real stinker when they released The Price is Right on PlayStation Network. It was a lazy attempt to take something fun and enjoyable -- in that case, the extremely famous television gameshow The Price is Right -- and make it into something worth playing on a console. However, with the release of Family Feud on PSN this week, we're glad to report that Ludia has delivered to the PlayStation faithful a far, far stronger effort that may very well be worth your hard-earned cash.
Family Feud has a long, decades-old history on television in the United States, and if you're not familiar with the program, chances are you don't pay very close attention. First premiering in 1976 (and hosted by the amorous Richard Dawson), Family Feud has basically stayed its course and played the same over the last thirty-five years, through six hosts and serious amounts of syndication. Two families of five contend with one another as two teams, answering basic survey questions that the producers of the show have purportedly asked normal, everyday people. After an initial head-to-head round that determines control of the board, a single family attempts to fill out the survey as completely as possible by making guesses that best answer the posed question. They're only allowed to get three wrong answers, however, and if the survey isn't completely filled out by the third strike, the other family gets to steal with a single correct answer.
Sound confusing? It really isn't. And whether you know how to play the game or not, the PSN version of Family Feud makes things fairly easy for you. You can either choose to play the game locally or, unlike The Price is Right, over PlayStation Network with perfect strangers who are also looking for a match. Should you choose to play online, you'll naturally be limited to playing with a single player, but locally, up to two players can enjoy the action. Of course, should you choose to play alone, you aren't relegated only to games on the PlayStation Network. You can also choose to play a single-player campaign, of sorts, that brings you through twelve separate families, each vying for the coveted $20,000 (fictional) prize.
There are a few negatives worth noting, however. Surveys almost always tend to have a stupid answer. That is to say, there's usually an answer on a survey that has you scratching your head... but then again, the real-life syndicated gameshow on television does that to you, too. Typing could also be an issue, especially for people who have difficulty finding letters on-screen. The game does have an auto-finish feature for words as you type them in (which is both a blessing and a curse, since this feature can sometimes give you unwanted hints or outright tell you a word isn't in the game), but why doesn't a USB keyboard work? Why do we have to use the controller? And finding an online match for us was difficult, though we were playing the first night the game was out, so that's bound to change as more people get their hands on the title.
Closing Comments
It might sound hard to believe to some, but Family Feud is a quality PSN title that will prove to be worth your $10, depending on your circumstances. If you're only in the market for a few PSN titles a year, you're obviously going to want to take a pass, but if you like playing gameshow videogames, like local or online multiplayer, or simply want a casual experience that doesn't require quick fingers or too much thought, pick up Family Feud. It's an easily digestible game with enough to keep you coming back for more, aside from the base gameplay. Unlockable attire and other character customization is a plus, and of course, there are trophies to earn as well... attainable ones, too!
