Happy Birthday Mart Review
Genre: Simulation
Posted: 27 July 2010
Happy Birthday Mart is unfocused and unfun. It's meant to be a simple shopkeeping sim putting you in the role of a happy-go-lucky store-owning animal -- the happiness, though, is the only thing that comes across well.

Petz Kittens Review DS
Genre: Virtual Pet
Posted: 27 July 2010
Ubisoft's Petz series of virtual pet games often offer only limited designs, but Petz Kittens on DSiWare might be its most feature-lite release yet. There are, near as I can tell, only four activities -- feeding your kitten, playing peekaboo or red light/green light, tossing a balloon around and just rubbing the animal with the stylus to pet it.

In an apparent attempt to modernize the series with Hydro Thunder Hurricane for XBLA, Vector Unit have succeeded only in bogging the arcade racer down with tired genre conventions the series didn't need, robbing the game of much of its original appeal.

Symphony of the Night re-imagined as a Puzzle Quest-style adventure? Fans of Castlevania should have no qualms about making that download, but Castlevania Puzzle is not without missteps. And those may hinder your fight to Dracula's lair.

Cruise Party Review Wii
Genre: Party
Posted: 22 July 2010
Cruise Party might more easily have been called "Cruise Casino," as the title as-is gives you no real clue that this is just a simple gambling compilation. You'd think it might be some active, motion-controlled mini-game collection -- or a ship-themed take on something like Mario Party's character-based board gaming. But, no. It's just four virtual Vegas games.

Limbo Review XBox 360
Genre: Puzzle
Posted: 19 July 2010
Videogames are an art form made up of visuals, sound, and a mysterious little something we call gameplay. Limbo is the perfect example of these three crafts working together in harmony to create something astounding. With no text, no dialogue, and no explanation, it manages to communicate circumstance and causality to the player more simply than most games. This 2D puzzle platformer in a film noir style is one of the best games you'll play this year on any platform.

Arcade Sports Review Wii
Genre: Sports
Posted: 14 July 2010
You've seen this kind of game millions of times before on Wii -- a tossed-together collection of various sporting activities reimagined to work with the motion controls of the Wii Remote, but the controls are rough, the graphics are worse and the presentation is just painful to try to trudge through. Yep, this is just one more. Arcade Sports is instantly forgettable.

DeathSpank Review XBox 360
Genre: RPG,Action
Posted: 14 July 2010
Every RPG has a hero. He or she can be brave, moody and ridiculously good looking, but for the most part, the hero is always willing to do the bidding of others. DeathSpank is a satirical action RPG from the creator of Monkey Island that packs epic loot drops and a naïve, well-meaning protagonist, who shares the game's title as a name. Still, our DeathSpank turns out to be more of an errand boy than a hero. His goal of finding a mysterious object dubbed "The Artifact" requires him to help others out along the way. On your journey, you perform stereotypical RPG tasks, kill a lot of nasty monsters, get better equipment and level up.

NCAA Football 11 Review XBox 360

Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies Review DS
Genre: RPG
Posted: 09 July 2010
The latest member of the series, Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies, is headed exclusively to the Nintendo DS and introduces impressive multiplayer functionality to the canonical series. The game also features character classes, item creation and -- as you might expect -- plenty of slimes to defeat. I was frustrated by certain aspects of Dragon Quest IX, as the game's by-the-books battle system is almost too traditional for its own good and the focus on multiplayer hurts Dragon Quest's otherwise enticing story. But Dragon Quest IX is ultimately a charming game with plenty to do.

Family Feud Review PS3
Genre: Trivia
Posted: 07 July 2010
Not too long ago, Ludia gave us a real stinker when they released The Price is Right on PlayStation Network. It was a lazy attempt to take something fun and enjoyable -- in that case, the extremely famous television gameshow The Price is Right -- and make it into something worth playing on a console. However, with the release of Family Feud on PSN this week, we're glad to report that Ludia has delivered to the PlayStation faithful a far, far stronger effort that may very well be worth your hard-earned cash.

Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 Portable Review PSP
Genre: RPG
Posted: 06 July 2010
Hopefully, you don't need me to tell you that Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 is an exceptional game. I mean, IGN's reviewed the game twice now -- once as a standalone game and again as the director's cut known as FES -- and each time the advice was simple: play this game. Now, the Shin Megami Tensei title is back as Persona 3 Portable, a hybrid that packs the story of Persona 3, the improvements of FES, and a new female character that's the PSP's own.

Crackdown 2 Review XBox 360
Genre: Shooter
Posted: 05 July 2010
Epic's oft-repeated motto for Gears of War 2 was, "Bigger, better, and more badass." For developer Ruffian's follow-up to Crackdown, it feels like the motto was, "Don't rock the boat." Here is a sequel that feels near identical to its predecessor in just about every way. The formula is the same. The game's location is the same. The graphics look about the same (if not worse). And the shortcomings, well they're about the same too. Is it fun? Yes. That hasn't changed either.

LEGO Harry Potter PSP Review PSP
Genre: Adventure,Action
Posted: 02 July 2010
The LEGO games are nothing new. From LEGO Star Wars to LEGO Indiana Jones, we've been there and done that quite a few times. Now, the LEGO style of game has been combined with another ultra-popular license in the form of the fictional literary series Harry Potter. The PSP version of LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4 differs from the console versions of the game, but it's still a slick-looking, solid-playing game. With that said, it's not going to make new fans that weren't already into LEGO games or Harry Potter. We'll just get this right out of the way: if you're not into either, than this game isn't going to be for you.

Green Day: Rock Band Review Wii

Reviewing Green Day: Rock Band almost seems silly. People kept asking me how the game is and all I could think to say was "It's Green Day: Rock Band." That is literally the best description and review of this title. If all of those words together appeal to you, this is your game. If any of those words make you yawn or grimace, then you can stop reading now.

Pac-Match Party HD Review
Genre: Puzzle
Posted: 29 June 2010
Pac-Match Party recasts Pac-Man as the star of a match-three puzzler. The general idea adheres to the longtime formula: swap pairs of icons – in this case, ghosts, fruit, and other goodies – to line up at least three similar items. However, when you clear icons, Pac-Man himself moves around a track that circles the playfield.

LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4 Review PS3

The cards were stacked against LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4. This is the fourth franchise to get the LEGO treatment and something like the seventh LEGO game if you include the double-dip on the Star Wars adventures -- people know the formula of stud collecting, character unlocking and drop-in/drop-out co-op pretty well. When I – a seasoned LEGO vet -- sat down to play Harry Potter, even my eyes began to roll a bit at the thought of the "blast everything" quest I was about to set out on.
