New Zealanders have failed to make the cut at the US Golf Open at Bethpage in New York.

David Smail, who finished his first round in style with birdies at the final two holes for an even-par 70 yesterday, plunged out of contention with a seven-over 77 in the second round.

Doug Batty was struggling at seven-over after 24 holes when play was halted yesterday and finished the round eight-over today.

Michael Campbell, the 2005 champion, finished 16-over after carding a seven-over yesterday and a nine-over today.

The cut is set to be made at four-over with American Ricky Barnes leading at eight-under and compatriot Lucas Glover second at seven-under.
