Payoff fever hits Warrior fans
16 September 2008 03:29pmPlayoff fever has hit New Zealand Warrior fans, with the public allocation of tickets for the National Rugby League semifinal in Auckland selling out in minutes today.
The Warriors host the Sydney Roosters in a sudden-death clash at the 26,000-capacity Mt Smart Stadium on Friday night, and there were long queues at ticket agencies this morning.
Chief executive Wayne Scurrah said the reaction to the 18-15 upset over defending premiers Melbourne on Sunday had been phenomenal.
He said the rush on tickets was "even more amazing" than the last time the Warriors hosted a playoff match -- against Parramatta last season.
"The tickets released to the public this morning had gone within 15 minutes," he said.
Scurrah said the Warriors had about 1000 tickets left on hold for season members of both clubs.
If any remained at the end of the day, they would be released to the public at midday tomorrow.
A capacity crowd of 26,000 would be more than double the Warriors' average home gate this season of just 11,444, the second lowest in the league.
Whatever the result against the Roosters, the match will be the Warriors' last of the year at Mt Smart Stadium.
The winners face Manly in Sydney, where the grand final will also be staged.
