Junior Warriors post season-high score
14 September 2008 06:26pmThe Junior Warriors fought back from a 14-point deficit to overpower St George Illawarra 47-20 in their week one NYC finals encounter at Olympic Park today.
Third-placed in the regular season, the Junior Warriors conceded 14 points in the opening 17 minutes to trail 0-14 against the sixth-ranked Dragons.
But the Tony Iro-coached side eventually rediscovered the form that has made it one of the new competition's hottest points-scoring acts this year.
In a 17-minute surge, the Junior Warriors scored four converted tries to transform their poor start into a 24-14 lead.
And they amassed another 23 points in the second half in charging to their highest total so far this season.
Standoff Isaac John and right winger Bill Tupou scored two tries each, Tupou's brace making him the team's equal top try-scorer alongside fullback and NYC Player of the Year Kevin Locke with 13.
Earlier Locke's conversion of his team's first try of the day by John took him to 200 points for the season.
The Junior Warriors now play Penrith in week two of the finals next weekend. The fourth-ranked Panthers lost 16-24 to Parramatta (fifth) last night.
The Eels will meet the Dragons while the Bulldogs (seventh) and Gold Coast (eighth) have been eliminated. Canberra (first) and Brisbane (second) both won to advance to week three of the finals.
