Chatham defenders go down in penalty shootout
13 June 2009 07:52pmEast Coast Bay's defence of the Chatham Cup ended when Manurewa won a dramatic dramatic penalty shootout 7-6 in a third round match today.
Goalkeeper Albon Houston was the hero for Manurewa, saving two spot kicks to send his team into the fourth round on July 4.
The teams cycled through 10 penalties each as the shootout went to sudden death, but Houston's second save proved decisive and prevented the two keepers from having to take penalties themselves.
Neither side could find the net during normal time but Graham Kay's extra time strike looked to have clinched an upset for Manurewa before a George Suri equaliser sent the tie into a shootout.
Northern League first division side, Three Kings United, continue to be the dark horse of the 82nd edition of the competition after upsetting Premier League Hamilton Wanderers 4-1 at Keith Hay Park with Jacob Mathews scoring twice.
