Chatham defenders go down in penalty shootout

NZPA/Wayne Drought | 13 June 2009 07:52pm

East Coast Bay's defence of the Chatham Cup ended when Manurewa won a dramatic dramatic penalty shootout 7-6 in a third round match today.

Goalkeeper Albon Houston was the hero for Manurewa, saving two spot kicks to send his team into the fourth round on July 4.

The teams cycled through 10 penalties each as the shootout went to sudden death, but Houston's second save proved decisive and prevented the two keepers from having to take penalties themselves.

Neither side could find the net during normal time but Graham Kay's extra time strike looked to have clinched an upset for Manurewa before a George Suri equaliser sent the tie into a shootout.

Northern League first division side, Three Kings United, continue to be the dark horse of the 82nd edition of the competition after upsetting Premier League Hamilton Wanderers 4-1 at Keith Hay Park with Jacob Mathews scoring twice.

In Christchurch, Adam Cowen celebrated his 19th birthday with an extra-time winner as Woolston Technical defeated Christchurch United 1-0.

The teenaged rose highest to meet a 102nd minute corner and send six-time winners Christchurch tumbling out of the competition.

Three-time winners Miramar were in scintillating form at David Farrington Park scorching Hawke's Bay club Maycenvale United 10-2 with Dominic Rowe helping himself to four goals.

Peter Halstead and Michael Eagar each scored twice.

Wellington United put six past Taradale, while Waterside-Karori came from 2-1 down to clinch a 3-2 win over Palmerston North End in extra time.

Auckland Sunday Leaguers Bohemian Celtic finally dipped out of the Cup with a 0-3 loss to Metro.

In two Women's Knockout Cup ties played in Christchurch today, 2008 runners-up Western edged past Halswell 2-1 while Avon upset Ferrymead Bays 3-1 on penalties after extra time finished 3-3.
