Jones to face Harkins at Futures semifinal
20 June 2009 07:59pmIt's been a good week for Sacha Jones on the hard courts of Brownsville, Texas at the $10,000 ITF Futures Tournament there.
Second seed Jones is the sole remaining seed in the women's singles, and has progressed through to the semi-finals, where she will face qualifier Macall Harkins from the USA.
In the quarter-finals, Jones defeated wildcard Ellen Tsay (USA) 7-6 6-3.
Dianne Hollands, the other New Zealander in the draw left the tournament at the quarter-finals, losing to Harkins in three sets 3-6 6-1 6-3.
In doubles, Jones and her partner Ashley Weinhold of the USA are top seeds and play wildcards Harkins and Ester Goldfeld (USA).
On the men's ITF Futures Tour, Oliver Statham continues his inspired play on the clay courts of Giza, Egypt.
The only unseeded player left in the singles draw, Statham defeated seventh seeded Belgian Frederic De Fays 7-6 4-6 7-6. Statham will face third seed Photos Kallias (Cyprus) in the semifinal.
With his partner Adam El Mihdawy from the USA, Statham made the doubles final, but lost to third-seeded local pairing Karim Maamoun and Sherif Sabry 6-4 6-3.
