Ferrer opens defence of Ordina title
16 June 2009 09:16amThird-seeded David Ferrer of Spain launched his title defence at the Ordina Open Monday with a 6-2, 7-5 win over hometown wildcard Jesse Huta Galung.
Marcos Baghdatis' match against second-seeded Tommy Robredo of Spain was rescheduled to Tuesday due to darkness. Thiemo de Bakker couldn't use the home support to wrap up a win against Germany's Bjorn Phau after the match was also called off at 7-6 (3), 2-6, 1-1.
Ferrer joins sixth-seeded Marc Gicquel in the second round after the Frenchman defeated Belgium's Steve Darcis 6-2 6-3.
"I didn't play that bad," said Galung, who also suffered a first round loss to the same opponent at the grass court tournament last year. "It is also not without reason that he is the title defender here."
Fourth-seeded Rainer Schuettler of Germany saw off Nicolas Devilder of France 6-4 7-6 (6) in Monday's late match.
Mischa Zverev of Germany was 4-1 down when his retirement allowed Michael Llodra of France to advance to the second round.
Oscar Hernandez and Jeremy Chardy also won Monday.
Seventh-seeded Chardy of France booked his place in the second round after defeating Philipp Petzschner of Germany 6-1, 6-3 while Spaniard Hernandez was a 6-3 6-2 winner against Daniel Koellerer of Austria.
Top-seeded Fernando Verdasco reached the second round with an easy 6-3, 7-5 win over Pablo Andujar Sunday. Ramon Sluiter, another Dutch wild card, was also among the winners Sunday dispatching Daniel Gimeno-Traver.
Also Monday, No. 6 Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia saw off Roberta Vinci of Italy, 7-6 (2) 6-4 to advance while Ksenia Pervak of Russia ended Petra Cetkovska's chances of reaching the second round with a 7-5 7-6 (6) win.
But No. 3 Flavia Pennetta of Italy beat Taiwan's Chan Yung-Jan 6-4 6-2 to reach the second round.
Later Monday, three-time semifinalist Tommy Robredo faces Marcos Baghdatis seeking his first win against the Cypriot.
