Unmetered FAQ

What is unmetering?

Unmetering means any internet traffic generated while browsing specified sites, will not count towards your monthly broadband usage.

As a TelstraClear Residential Broadband customer, Trade Me and all video content on www.clearnet.co.nz/video will be unmetered, and can be accessed and viewed without affecting your monthly usage total. The only exceptions to this are ads displayed within the videos, which will still be counted.

How does unmetering work?

When you log onto the internet with your TelstraClear Residential Broadband connection, your computer is assigned an IP address by TelstraClear to help identify that computer from all others connected to the internet.

When you access clearnet.co.nz/video or Trade Me, the network will recognise your IP address as one assigned to a TelstraClear Broadband connection and will know not to meter your usage while browsing that site.

Similarly, if you access clearnet.co.nz/video from a non TelstraClear Residential Broadband connection (such as your work) then your usage will be metered.

What content will be unmetered?

TradeMe.co.nz, all video content on clearnet.co.nz/video and the game servers you can access through clearnetdeluxe.co.nz will be unmetered from 21st September 2008.

How long will Trade Me and Clearnet Video be unmetered?

All content specified above on Trade Me and Clearnet will be unmetered, starting 21st September, 2008 through to 30th June, 2010.

How will I know I'm on an unmetered site?

If you are on a Clearnet site that has unmetered content, you will see the following logo on the page to help remind you the content is unmetered. However, there is no logo on Trade Me
unmetered

If you are not on TradeMe.co.nz and there is no on-screen flag to let you know that a site is unmetered, your usage will count towards your monthly usage total.

Clicking links or ads can take you away from an unmetered Clearnet page. Content accessed, viewed, or downloaded on an external site will count towards your monthly usage total. Always check the address bar to see if the URL is one of the unmetered sites mentioned above if you are unsure.

How can I be sure I'm not getting charged for viewing unmetered content?

You can keep a close eye on your usage to make sure it isn't changing after viewing content on Trade Me or clearnet.co.nz/video by checking the TelstraClear internet usage meter. Please note that the usage meter provides an estimate of your usage only and may be running up to 6 hours behind.

How much data is used when watching a video?

Watching one minute of video on Clearnet.co.nz is equivalent to downloading 3.5 to 3.9MB of data.

Will I be able to download content from clearnet.co.nz/video without it impacting my usage?

Viewing video content on Clearnet.co.nz/video will not impact your usage however the content cannot be downloaded and viewed independently from the video player on the Clearnet.co.nz website.

Can dial up internet customers access unmetered video content as well?

Access to www.clearnet.co.nz/video is not restricted, dial up internet customers will have access. However broadband and dial up usage is metered differently; broadband metering is based on the amount of incoming and outgoing data used over a customer’s connection, dial up metering is based on the time spent online e.g. the number of minutes spent connected. Unmetering only applies to data usage so isn’t relevant for dial up connections. Time spent online at any website when using a dial up internet connection will count towards any existing monthly time allowance for the applicable dial up plan.

Dial up customers should also keep in mind that video content on the Clearnet.co.nz website uses technology optimised for internet speeds of 500kbps or more. Dial up internet speeds fall well under this so the viewing experience is likely to be affected. There is also no change to the viewing experience on Trade Me for customers on dial up.
